It’s that time of year again! When college students are going nuts on Pinterest trying to find the cutest dorm decor.
I know my “DIY Projects” Pinterest board is full of pins that I will never actually get around to making. There are simply too many great ideas and not enough time.
Probably the easiest and cheapest project I did last year for my dorm were these DIY picture frames. Photos of your family and friends are really nice to look at when you’re missing home. I had about 10 photos I wanted to frame and bring to school with me, but I ran into a couple of problems. One, being that cute picture frames are expensive when you are buying more than one. And two, I couldn’t find any frames that matched my dorm decor. So I decided to get a little crafty..
This project is extremely easy and all you need is a few supplies.
- Picture frames from your local thrift store (I explain below)
- Spray paint in your desired frame color
- Washi tape in a pattern that matches your dorm decorations
- Masking or painters tape
If you go to your local thrift shop, you can find a large assortment of miss-matched picture frames. They’re super cheap too, I’m talking $1.00 each. You can grab frames of any color and material, it doesn’t matter what they look like. The ones I picked up ranged from plastic to wood, red to yellow.
Once you’ve bought your miscellaneous picture frames, either remove the glass front entirely or tape over the glass with the masking or painters tape. This will keep any spray paint from getting on it.
In a well ventilated area, spray paint the frames. Do a few coats and make sure to get all of the sides and edges.
Once the spray paint is completely dry (wait about a day) use the washi tape to decorate the frames. Get creative and apply the tape in all different kinds of patterns.
The purple ones below were for my dorm room, the two end ones on the right were my sister’s.
That’s it. You now have super cute, one of a kind, picture frames that match your dorm room perfectly.
